Fall Paddle boarding time in Naramata
Yes, it is Fall and paddle boarding in Naramata is amazing. You have the lake to yourself and the colors on the shore around you are nothing but spectacular. When the Coots are back floating in Mill Bay you know fall is here and winter is on its way. You are privileged to see so many different birds on shore, on the lake and above your head. We get to see eagles, osprey, hawks, loons, ducks and soon the swans that will come to visit for a while over the winter too. There is something so incredible about paddling on a mirror of glass during the fall and winter.
What to wear:
Generally, I go out when the water is calm during the fall and winter. I am a pretty confident paddler so I don’t put my dry suit on till mid November. Until then I wear what I would wear running. Except for the most amazing pair of just below the knee winter kayak boots. These boots enable me to walk out in water deep enough to clear my fin and get on my board without getting your feet wet!
Keeping your feet dry is key on staying out during colder temperatures. Years back I would wear 5 or 7 mm neoprene booties but your feet would get wet and they don’t move as much on your board so they get cold quicker which doesn’t make for an enjoyable paddling experience. I also wear my skate ski gloves on my hands, they are waterproof, flexible and warm and pack an extra layer and hat.
Safety First:
Remember please wear your sup ankle leash and your PFD (personal flotation device). Let someone know your paddle plan, bring your phone for emergencies or capturing beautiful photos while your out there.
Enjoy the quiet time and magnificent colors of the fall change.
